    Summary
    Provides a variety of skilled construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair of facilities, buildings, and mechanical systems. Works primarily in an area of specialization (e.g., electrical, plumbing, locksmith, painting, carpentry), yet is fully qualified and capable of performing related work at this level of skill and assisting or participating with others in their specialty.

    The Plumber is a multi-skilled maintenance specialist, requiring journey level experience in commercial plumbing and general competency in additional related areas.

    Job Duties

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Performs major plumbing repairs. Inspects, maintains, and repairs complete plumbing systems, equipment, appliances, controls, and fixtures, for water, steam, wastewater, gas, and other fluid flows. Solders, may weld, and sweats pipe lines and joints.
    • Works from sketches, drawings, and blueprints to install, maintain, and repair equipment, devices, and fixtures such as toilets, sinks, fountains, hot water heaters, dish-and clothes washing machines, vacuum breakers, backflow devices, gas appliance safety controls, steam tables, plumbing fixtures, drains, sinks, sumps, pumps, water heaters and loops, and showers.
    • Accesses and retrieves work orders using the automated work order system. May enter time and materials information associated with work performed on orders.
    • Installs, tests, maintains, and prepares documentation about the testing and maintenance of backflow devices, fire sprinkler devices, and fixtures .
    • Installs, maintains, and repairs air and gas piping systems for cooking, heating, cooling and welding. Surveys gas safety devices and other plumbing equipment that may need repair or replacement.
    • Troubleshoots and repairs breakdowns such as clogged drains and fixtures. Removes obstructions, repairs lines and fixtures, and installs preventative enhancements. Unplugs and reroutes water and control lines.
    • May install and repair automatic, semi-automatic, and manually-operated lawn-sprinkler systems. Installs, maintains, and repairs automatic fire-sprinkler systems.
    • Recommends standards and specifications for equipment, materials, and workmanship for work performed by staff and outside contractors.
    • Participates with, or assists other skilled maintenance specialists in at least the following Skilled Maintenance - Plumber 2 areas such as carpentry, painting, locksmith, and electrical, as needed, to assure safety, balance workload, and complete projects on a timely-basis.
    • Maintains required records and makes reports. Prepares reports on work completed and materials used. Ensures that secondary containers for cleaning and other products are properly labeled. Ensures that Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for assigned area(s) are up to date.
    • Operates and may perform minor maintenance of equipment including light tractors, skip loaders, forklifts and other labor saving devices.
    • May lead or assist other maintenance staff and temporary workers assisting with maintenance.
    • Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Requirements (Education, Certifications, Level of Experience)
    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience
    The position requires a High School diploma or equivalent plus specialized training and 4 years of experience as a plumber with generalist experience in related trades such as carpentry, masonry, locksmith, or mechanical.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 5 years of experience as a licensed plumber.

    • 3 years' experience in plumbing at an institution of higher education or similar facility.
    • Knowledge of construction practices and ability to read construction drawings
    • Experience repairing and installing underground drain and supply systems.

    Supplemental Information

    Knowledge and Skills
    The position requires in-depth knowledge of potable water, wastewater, air, gas, and other fluid flow systems and working knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, materials, tools, equipment, layouts and set-ups used in at least one of the following areas: carpentry, electrical, and commercial painting, plus basic-to-journey level skills in the other areas listed. Requires a working knowledge of the uses and purposes of hand and power tools and equipment used on construction and general maintenance. Requires knowledge of the assembly and operation of labor saving devices such as scaffolding and personnel and material handling equipment. Requires basic knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance procedures for fire prevention systems, elevators, and swimming pools. Requires knowledge of safe work practices and the safety orders of the California OSHA related to area of specialty. Requires sufficient math skills to make measurements and estimate costs.     Abilities
    Requires the ability to perform journeyman plumbing work skillfully and in a timely manner and participate/assist in the work of other trades. Requires the ability to promptly respond to District emergencies. Requires the ability to operate vehicles and labor saving devices such as chain hoists and electric high-lift equipment, maintenance equipment, and hand and power tools used to perform construction, carpentry, electrical and mechanical services. Requires the ability to perform soldering and welding. Requires the ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, blueprints, schematics, and building and fire codes. Requires the ability to maintain records and activity logs. Requires the ability to estimate materials and labor for assignments. Requires the ability to observe safe work practices and handle hazardous materials according to accepted procedures. Requires the ability to complete projects on a timely basis and support special events. Requires the ability to maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others.

    Physical Abilities
    Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk up to 400 yards, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to heavy weights of up to 75 pounds on a regular basis. Requires the ability to push, pull, and guide materials over 75 pounds. Requires the ability to climb (e.g. ladders), stoop, kneel, and crouch on a regular basis. Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate specialized equipment and read technical (including blueprints) and safety information. Requires auditory ability to hear machinery sounds and alarms. Requires near and far visual acuity to read printed materials, moving objects, and observe work-in-progress. Requires speaking ability to carry on ordinary conversations. Requires the ability to work in extreme temperature conditions.

    Licenses and Certificates
    Requires a valid Driver's License.

    Working Conditions
    Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions where significant safety considerations exist from full-body physical labor and handling of medium-to heavy weight materials.

    Salary/Fringe Benefits

    Grade 38 on District Classified Salary Schedule ($6,136.86 - $7,380.76 /month).

    Health and welfare benefits include District contribution for medical/dental/vision benefits and employee life insurance ($50,000). (Cash in lieu option available on medical insurance.)

    Participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System that is also integrated with Social Security.

    Conditions of Employment

    This is a full-time, 12-calendar month classified position.

    Hours of employment are: Monday thru Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

    Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.

    Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.

    Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.

    Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.

    Candidates must be able to provide proof of California residency prior to employment.
